I was sent this link and was a bit skeptical at first. Within days, I was seeing them by the dozens. I am fairly confident I would have noticed these in previous years as they are hard to miss. I doubt they have been present before this year (at least not in the numbers I see in August 2020). Yesterday, Aug. 14th, I swam through 2 large patches of them near the middle of the pond.
I have to admit that knowing that many of them are hitting me in the face as I am swimming is a bit unnerving. But I can’t feel anything, so I keep on moving through the “blooms”, albeit with a pep in the stroke.
